How to calculate it yourself

Cubic feet = cubic yards × 27. To go the other way: cubic yards = cubic feet ÷ 27. To find bag count: cubic feet ÷ bag size in cubic feet, rounded up.

Common scenarios

Single flower bed (4×8 at 3" deep)

4 × 8 × 0.25 = 8 ft³ — that's 4 bags of 2 ft³ mulch. Not worth a delivery; buy bagged.

Front yard refresh (200 ft² at 3" deep)

200 × 0.25 = 50 ft³ ≈ 1.85 yd³. Twenty-five 2 ft³ bags or one bulk delivery — bulk is roughly half the price.

Full landscape (1,000 ft² at 3" deep)

1,000 × 0.25 = 250 ft³ ≈ 9.3 yd³. Always buy bulk at this volume.
