How to calculate it yourself

Bundles needed = ceil(roof_area_ft² ÷ ft²_per_bundle). Then add 10% waste for hips, valleys, and starter rows. Roof area = footprint × slope multiplier (see our roof pitch calculator).

Common scenarios

Small ranch home (1,500 ft² roof)

15 squares × 3 bundles = 45 bundles for 3-tab. Allow 10% waste = 50 bundles total.

Two-story (2,400 ft² roof)

24 squares × 4 bundles (architectural) = 96 bundles. Add 10% waste = 106 bundles.

Cottage with complex hips and valleys (1,800 ft²)

18 squares × 4 bundles = 72 bundles. Use 15% waste due to cuts = 83 bundles.
