How to calculate it yourself

Total weight = number of bags × bag weight. A pallet of mulch is 65 bags of 2 cu ft = 1,300–2,000 lbs depending on type. A standard pickup truck bed handles 30–40 bags safely.

Common scenarios

Refresh a 200 ft² front-yard bed, 3 in deep

50 ft³ = 25 bags. At 25 lbs per bag of hardwood: ~625 lbs total. Fits in one pickup-truck load.

Mulch around 5 trees with 6-ft mulch rings

Each ring at 3 in deep needs ~7 ft² × 0.25 ft = 1.75 ft³ ≈ 1 bag. Total: 5 bags, ~125 lbs.

Whole-yard refresh, 800 ft² at 3 in deep

200 ft³ = 100 bags = ~2,500 lbs. Bulk delivery (3.7 yd³) is much cheaper at this volume.
