How to use this calculator
- Measure length and width. Length is from the road to where the driveway ends. Width is 10–12 ft for one car, 18–20 ft for two cars or extra parking.
- Pick the depth. For a new driveway, plan 4 in of #57 base + 2 in of ¾" minus crusher run on top = 6 in total. For a refresh, 2 in is typical.
- Read tons and yards. Bulk gravel is sold by the ton or cubic yard. The calculator gives both. 1 yd³ of gravel weighs about 1.4 tons.
- Plan the order. Most suppliers deliver in 10–12 ton dump truck loads. Anything under that is a partial-load fee.
Formula
Tons = (Length × Width × Depth in feet) ÷ 27 × 1.4
Worked example
A 12 ft × 60 ft driveway × 6 in deep needs 360 ft³ ÷ 27 = 13.3 cubic yards = ~18.7 tons of gravel. Order in two trips: 9 yd³ of #57 base and 4.4 yd³ of crusher-run top. Add 10% waste.
Tips for accurate results
- Compact each lift with a roller or plate compactor before adding the next — uncompacted gravel ruts within months.
- Crown the driveway slightly so water runs off to the sides instead of pooling.
- Edge with timbers, pavers, or a poured concrete curb to keep the gravel from migrating onto the lawn.
- Plan for ¾ in or smaller stone on top — anything bigger is hard on tires and bare feet.
