Gravel Driveway Calculator

Use this gravel driveway calculator to plan a new gravel driveway or refresh an existing one. Driveways need a 4–6 in compacted layer, often built up in two lifts: a coarse base layer and a finer top layer.

How to use this calculator

  1. Measure length and width. Length is from the road to where the driveway ends. Width is 10–12 ft for one car, 18–20 ft for two cars or extra parking.
  2. Pick the depth. For a new driveway, plan 4 in of #57 base + 2 in of ¾" minus crusher run on top = 6 in total. For a refresh, 2 in is typical.
  3. Read tons and yards. Bulk gravel is sold by the ton or cubic yard. The calculator gives both. 1 yd³ of gravel weighs about 1.4 tons.
  4. Plan the order. Most suppliers deliver in 10–12 ton dump truck loads. Anything under that is a partial-load fee.

Formula

Tons = (Length × Width × Depth in feet) ÷ 27 × 1.4

Worked example

A 12 ft × 60 ft driveway × 6 in deep needs 360 ft³ ÷ 27 = 13.3 cubic yards = ~18.7 tons of gravel. Order in two trips: 9 yd³ of #57 base and 4.4 yd³ of crusher-run top. Add 10% waste.

Tips for accurate results

  • Compact each lift with a roller or plate compactor before adding the next — uncompacted gravel ruts within months.
  • Crown the driveway slightly so water runs off to the sides instead of pooling.
  • Edge with timbers, pavers, or a poured concrete curb to keep the gravel from migrating onto the lawn.
  • Plan for ¾ in or smaller stone on top — anything bigger is hard on tires and bare feet.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

  • Most driveways take 6 inches of gravel total: 4 in of #57 base plus 2 in of ¾" minus on top. A 12×60 ft driveway needs roughly 13 cubic yards (18 tons) to start fresh.
