How to use this calculator
- Enter the inches value. Type the inches — fractional inputs are fine (e.g. 18.5).
- Read the feet result. The primary result is feet. The stats include yards, meters, and centimeters.
- Use it for any unit. For board lengths, lumber, room dimensions — anywhere the spec is in inches and your tape measure is in feet.
Formula
Feet = Inches ÷ 12
Worked example
78 inches ÷ 12 = 6.5 feet. That's the standard rough opening for a 6-ft sliding patio door (78" tall = 6'-6").
Tips for accurate results
- 1 foot = 12 inches exactly — this is by definition.
- For fractional inches (1/2", 1/4", 3/8"), convert to decimal first: 1/2 = 0.5, 1/4 = 0.25, 3/8 = 0.375.
- In construction documents, dimensions like 7'-6" mean 7 feet 6 inches — that equals 7.5 feet.
- Lumber lengths are always in feet (8', 10', 12', 16') even though widths are in inches. Don't mix the two.
